The dates below assume that Saturday and Sunday are your regular days off and that your workplace follows the listed federal holiday observances. A holiday on the federal calendar does not automatically mean your employer offers that day off.

PTO Dates That Extend Your Break
These examples show exactly which working days to request. Each total includes weekends and the relevant observed holiday. Choose the options that match your schedule; the two Thanksgiving examples overlap and should not be added together.

If your employer already closes on the Friday after Thanksgiving, the four-day November 25–28 break needs no PTO. If your employer does not observe Veterans Day, the November 11–14 example would require two days off rather than one.
How Four PTO Days Can Create a 10-Day Year-End Break
For a worker receiving both federal observed holidays, the year-end arrangement is straightforward:
- Friday, December 24: Christmas Day observed.
- December 25–26: Saturday and Sunday.
- December 27–30: four working days to request off.
- Friday, December 31: New Year’s Day 2028 observed.
- January 1–2, 2028: Saturday and Sunday.
That creates 10 consecutive calendar days away from work, from December 24 through January 2 inclusive. The next Monday is January 3, 2028. Check that your employer uses December 31 as its New Year’s holiday before relying on this arrangement.
Build a PTO Plan You Can Actually Use
Start with one or two breaks you care about most. A calendar full of possible vacations can look attractive while exceeding your leave balance or conflicting with busy periods at work.
- Mark confirmed holidays first. Use your employer’s actual closure list.
- Add school and household commitments. Include school return dates, major appointments, and events you cannot move.
- Count requested workdays. Circle the days that require PTO and leave ordinary weekends uncounted.
- Check leave approval. Treat a request as tentative until it is approved.
- Record the return date. Writing “back at work” makes a cross-month break easier to read.
Use pencil or a different color for tentative plans. Once the dates are approved, add travel details to a monthly page so they do not crowd the yearly overview.
What If You Work Weekends or Rotating Shifts?
The tables will not give the correct PTO count for every shift pattern. Write out your scheduled shifts during the proposed break and count the shifts you must cover or take off. A Friday holiday may not create a three-day break if you normally work Saturday.
Likewise, do not subtract a holiday from your leave request if it is already one of your regular nonworking days. Your own roster and employer policy determine the useful calculation.
